    Onsite generation FAQs

    Does Avista install solar panels?

While Avista does not install solar or other renewable generation on behalf of our customers, we have gathered a list of qualified installers that you might consider for your work. It is recommended that you secure multiple bids to understand your options and best assess your opportunity.

Can you recommend a reputable installer?

Avista does NOT have a preferred vendor list, however we have partnered with a third party association to assess and qualify solar contractors within our service territory and developed a list of qualified installers that you might consider for your work. It is recommended that you secure multiple bids to understand your options and best assess your opportunity.

What is the cost to have solar panels installed?

Costs will include installation and equipment, with the size of your system and the efficiency of your panels being the largest variables in price. Avista’s Solar Estimator can help you compare your options and calculate estimates for varied system sizes and financial models.

Are there any rebates / incentives, or does Avista help cover the cost?

Avista currently offers net metering benefits for systems under 100 kw. You may also be eligible for state and / or federal incentives. Customers can use Avista’s solar estimator which includes any known incentives, along with your current electric rate to help you estimate the financials.

    What is net metering?

Net metering allows the customer to use the electricity that they generate to offset some or all of their energy usage, while remaining connected to the Avista grid to deliver back-up power or any additional electric needs. A "net meter" measures the difference between the amount of electricity supplied by Avista and the amount of electricity generated by the customer over the course of a month.

What are the financial and environmental benefits?

Solar power, like other renewable energy resources, has many environmental and health benefits. Try the solar estimator to assess financials.

Do solar panels work in a power outage?

If your solar panel system is connected to the grid, it will shut off in the event of an outage. This is a safety precaution to prevent emergency responders and Avista servicemen from being injured by power generated from a system being pushed back to the grid. If system reliability is important, you might consider installing battery backup for a few critical circuits within your home.

I've submitted an interconnection application, what's next?

Avista will confirm receipt of your completed application within five business days and notify you of approval within 20 business days. If you are NOT approved, we will contact you to discuss the required modification needed for approval.

I moved into a home with solar panels, now what?

Please contact us. Avista will work with you to be sure that the proper agreements are in place so that you can continue to receive the net metering benefits associated with the system and answer any other questions that you may have

Still have questions, contact us at solar@avistacorp.com or call (800) 227-9187. Avista Customer Service Representatives are available to assist you Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 7:00p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
