Natural gas backup generator
Installing a natural gas generator if you already have gas service.
A generator that runs on reliable natural gas is a great backup power solution for your home or business. However, there are a few things to consider before having a gas generator installed.
What installation costs should you know about?
Installation costs for a new natural gas generator can vary, based on the size of your unit, required site prep, permits and hourly labor. It’s advisable to obtain bids from at least three different contractors for comparison.

What is the process to get started on installation?
Simply follow these steps:
- Call us at 1-877-GAS-TEAM to discuss your interest in installing a natural gas generator.
- Find and hire a contractor of your choice. Use our helpful search tool at myavista.com/findacontractor to help you get started on finding qualified contractors.
- Work with your contractor to help you select a natural gas generator based on your needs.
- Avista will need to work with you and/or your contractor to collect the following information:
- What natural gas equipment do you currently have?
- Do you plan to add natural gas equipment other than a generator?
- What is the minimum inlet pressure required by your generator?
- What is the BTU rating of your generator?
- Check with your Electric Utility Provider to verify if there are electrical requirements for emergency/stand-by generation.
Once these steps are complete, you can confirm with your contractor to move forward. Avista will complete the installation of your larger gas meter, if needed, and service restoration. Your contractor will obtain the required permits and complete all work downstream of the gas meter. Please note: Your generator must be a minimum of three feet from all sides of your meter.
